First Look | The 2025 Focus JAM² rolls out brand new Bosch CX Gen 5 motor
Share

Having first arrived back in 2016, the Focus JAM² has consistently been one of the most popular electric mountain bikes on the market. Indeed the combination of sharp pricing, great spec and slick frame designs with neatly integrated batteries and motors has seen the JAM² become a regular sight on Aussie trails.

We’ve had a load of experience with various Focus e-MTB models over the years. In fact, over the past nine months alone we’ve reviewed the value-focussed JAM² 6.8, the impressively lightweight carbon JAM² SL 9.9, and the big travel SAM² 6.7.

As you can imagine then, we were intrigued to hear that Focus would be launching a new JAM² for 2025. We’d also encountered rumours that Bosch was due to release a new full-powered motor, kicking up the anticipation levels a few more notches.

Well folks, the time for anticipation is over because the new JAM² has finally been unveiled!

The Focus JAM² has been revamped for 2025, featuring the brand new Bosch CX Gen 5 motor.
With 160/150mm of travel, the JAM² is the fun-loving trail bike in the Focus e-MTB lineup.

An overview of the 2025 Focus JAM²

All-new for 2025, the Focus JAM² is the German brand’s do-everything e-MTB. As with the previous version it’s equipped with 29in wheels, a 160mm travel fork and 150mm of rear travel. That puts it into a similar category to other electrified trail bikes like the Specialized Levo, the Trek Rail and Amflow PL.

Unlike its competitors however, the new JAM² is currently only offered with an alloy frame. Though thanks to its hydroformed 7005 alloy tubing and smoothly finished welds, at first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

The overall frame layout is relatively unchanged, with a four-bar suspension platform that sees the shock being driven by a beefy rocker link. To improve sensitivity, the extension yoke incorporates a bearing mount that replaces the traditional DU shock bushing. Focus hasn’t published any specific kinematic info but has alluded to the new JAM² featuring a firm and supportive tune.

Cable routing has also been updated and no longer passes through the silly C.I.S stem. It now routes through the upper headset for a significantly neater-looking cockpit that should be a bit less annoying to work on.

The Bosch CX Gen 5 motor doesn’t look hugely different, but we’re told it is quieter than its predecessor with no clacking noise on the descents. Brilliant!

The new Bosch CX Gen 5 motor

Of course one of the biggest stories with the Focus JAM² is its use of the brand new Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 motor. That’s right folks, after five years of loyal service, Bosch has finally replaced the CX Gen 4 motor!

From a cursory glance at the on-paper specs, things don’t appear all that different with the CX Gen 5 offering the same 85Nm of torque and 600W of peak power output. Weight also remains similar at a claimed 2.8kg.

Look a little closer however, and you’ll see that the new drive unit has adopted the simplified two-bolt mounting arrangement of the lightweight SX motor. More significantly, Bosch says it’s eliminated the rattling noise that has plagued its previous motor designs when freewheeling across lumpy terrain. Hallelujah!

While the new Focus JAM² will come fitted with a 600Wh battery inside the downtube, it will accommodate the larger 800Wh battery for those who want more juice.

Four different battery options

To go with the new CX motor, Bosch has developed new 600Wh and 800Wh PowerTube batteries. These feature the same high-tech cells found in the smaller 400Wh CompactTube battery, which offers a higher energy density and therefore lower weight.

Focus has decided to spec each JAM² model with the 600Wh battery, which is designed to be easily removable from the downtube should you need to charge it separately. Otherwise there’s an external port integrated into the frame’s seat tube for charging the battery while mounted.

For riders who are in need of more range, the JAM² frame can accommodate the larger 800Wh battery with the addition of a different downtube cover. The frame is also compatible with the 250Wh PowerMore range extender, which gives you a total of four possible battery combinations.

Bosch has also supplied the Kiox 300 display for the cockpit of the JAM². There’s a wireless handlebar remote for switching the motor’s assist levels and activating the walk mode, and of course there’s a plethora of further functions and customisation options to be tapped into via the Flow app. See our Bosch Tuning Tips feature for more.

Focus has ditched the silly C.I.S stem in favour of routing the control lines directly through the upper headset. It looks better and should be less annoying to work on.

Geometry & size chart

Geometry on the Focus JAM² is very similar to the previous version, which was already a pretty well-dialled bike.

Each of the four frame sizes features a 65° head angle, a 76.5° effective seat tube angle and a 450mm rear centre length. Seat tube lengths are unchanged and the bottom bracket drop remains at 25mm. However, reach measurements have been pulled back by 5mm and the stack heights are a bit taller than before.

Focus is no longer spec’ing the angle-adjust headset on the JAM², and the frame is free of any geometry-altering flip chips. As such, it isn’t really designed to be set up as a mullet with a 27.5in rear wheel.

There are four sizes available in the Focus JAM², each of which is purpose-built around 29in wheels.
