Earlier this month, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) introduced the Toyota Harrier 2.5 HEV in Malaysia. The hybrid updates the fourth-gen XU80 in the country, but remains the sole option for the SUV in the local line-up, taking over from the 2.0 Luxury that was launched here in April 2020.
The switch to a hybrid powertrain also sees an increase in the price. The Harrier 2.5 HEV is priced from RM289,000 (on-the-road, without insurance), which means it’s nearly RM40k more than the 2.0 Luxury, which has been discontinued.
Power is up from the old model. On this one, a 2.5 litre A25A-FXS Dynamic Force engine, which offers 178 PS (176 hp) at 5,700 rpm and 221 Nm from 3,600 rpm to 5,200 rpm, works with a 120 PS (118 hp, or 88 kW) and 202 Nm electric motor to deliver a total system output of 217 PS, with power sent to the front wheels. The 2.0 litre Dynamic Force four-cylinder on the previous one had 173 PS and 203 Nm for its output numbers.
The exterior equipment list includes automatic bi-LED projector headlamps and LED indicators, LED DRLs, LED foglamps and LED combination tail lamps, as well as auto-folding mirrors with integrated indicators, a kick sensor-equipped hands-free tailgate and a fixed panoramic sunroof. The Harrier 2.5 HEV rides on 18-inch alloys, wrapped with 225/60 R18 rubbers, the set-up similar to the 2.0 Luxury.
Inside, you’ll find a 12.3-inch multi-info instrument TFT display screen and an eight-inch Display Audio head unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto and a six-speaker audio system.
Standard kit also includes combination leather upholstery in black, ventilated/heated 12-way driver and four-way front passenger power adjustable seats, dual-zone air-conditioning, a Qi wireless device charger, a 10.5-inch colour head-up display, five USB-C ports (two for charging and one for data in front, and two for charging for the rear seats) and a digital rear view mirror.
As for safety and driving assistance systems, the Harrier 2.5 HEV is equipped with seven airbags (driver, front passenger, side, curtain and driver’s knee) and a Toyota Safety Sense suite that includes a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, lane tracing assist, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control, adaptive high beam and road sign assist. Additionally, there’s a blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, vehicle approach notice, a parking support brake feature and a panoramic view monitor, among others.
Exterior colours offered for the Harrier 2.5 HEV in Malaysia include Platinum White Pearl Mica, Precious Black and Grey Metallic, where the first two colour choices command an RM800 premium. The SUV is covered by a five-year unlimited mileage warranty, and an eight-year, unlimited mileage hybrid components warranty that covers the hybrid battery, inverter and power management ECU.
