After a bit of experimentation, Wikipedia has said no to AI slop. The latest terms of use for the world’s most famous encyclopedia say that articles and updates can’t be generated by large language models, and will be removed if found. Considering how frequently “AI” just makes crap up, and how many problems it’s introduced for Wikipedia, that seems like a good idea.

There will be some exceptions. Editors are allowed to use AI tools for basic copy editing, and AI-translated articles are also allowed, but both of these must be evaluated by a human editor. Translations also need to come from someone who’s fluent in both languages to guard against more hallucinations and frequent issues with machine translation.

So far the new rules are only being applied to the English version of Wikipedia, by far the largest. Editors for other versions may come up with their own rules, but I get the feeling that a lot of them will follow suit. For the full report, check out PCWorld.
