When God of War Laufey launches, Sony Santa Monica will welcome fans back to a world of gods, magic, and action–elements we don’t care about, because we’re here for Phranque the Cube–or when we reject your reality and substitute our own cubic one, he’ll be Frank. The real star of this week’s State of Play livestream, Phranque, stole the show with his gelatinous simplicity and bouncy sound effects, while The Boys and Star Trek: Lower Decks star Jack Quaid provided both the voice and the motion-capture for Phranque.
In case you haven’t seen it, the behind-the-scenes footage of those mocap sessions is hilarious.

Needless to say, we’re not the only fans of Phranque the Cube. Social media has been buzzing with people talking about the perfectly squishy organism–described as a “curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition” by Sony Santa Monica–and how he’s the perfect companion for Faye on her journey to bring peace back to the afterlife. And Phranque’s enchanted ribbon sword-guardian pal, Rue, is also pretty adorable. Seeing Phranque bounce around and hearing him subject enemies to air-juggle combos is delightful, and so far, it looks like everyone loves him:
For now, those precious few minutes of Phranque the Cube are all we’re getting. There’s no release date yet for God of War: Laufey, but it is coming to PS5. Fans of the franchise have lots more to look forward to, as the original trilogy of games is being remade, and production on a live-action TV adaptation at Amazon Prime Video began a few months ago.

That must have been a weird first morning of motion capture.

Me at the climax of my God of War Laufey playthrough after the cube makes a heroic sacrifice and I have to go to Turbo Hell, a layer lower than regular Hell, to rescue it.

Just make it exist first. You can make it good later.

God of War can try all it wants, but there will ever only be one video game cube for me:

"When the cube isn't onscreen in the new God of War, everyone should ask 'where's the cube?'"

God of War Laufey boldly merges several mythologies into one universe: Norse, Egyptian and dated ITV game shows.
