Setting up Integration of SAP Business Data Cloud with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition using Cloud Integration Automation Service

SAP Business Data Cloud is a fully managed SaaS solution that unifies and governs all SAP data and connects seamlessly with third-party data. It gives line-of-business leaders context to make impactful decisions and provides the high-quality data foundation to the Autonomous Enterprise.

A core pillar of SAP’s Business Data Fabric strategy enabled by SAP Business Data Cloud is the integration of your SAP S/4HANA Cloud clients which allows you to tap into the master data and process data of your business operations.

The integration is supported for the following versions of SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition: 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025. Additionally, ensure that the SAP Note 3500131 (“ABAP Data Integration for SAP Business Data Cloud”) has been applied in your system.

Here is an excellent blog post that walks you through the steps of setting up this integration.

The SAP Business Data Cloud administration guide contains exhaustive instructions about how to integrate your SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition system with SAP Business Data Cloud. You may have noticed that the latest version of the guide now starts with a recommendation to use Cloud Integration Automation service for that.

In this blog post we will talk about how Cloud Integration Automation service makes setting up integration of your SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition system with SAP Business Data Cloud much easier and less error-prone.

Cloud Integration Automation service will guide you through the tasks of the integration configuration. The workflow is tailored to your system landscape and organizational responsibilities. It ensures that all steps are executed in the proper order and lets you monitor the progress of the integration setup.

For more information about Cloud Integration Automation service check out the User Guide. This blog post describes how to activate Cloud Integration Automation service in your system landscape.

Once you have subscribed to the Cloud Integration Automation service in SAP BTP Cockpit go to “Instances & Subscriptions” in your subaccount and click the application. This will launch the Cloud Integration Automation service UI. On the home screen click the “Plan Integration Scenario” tile:

1 - launch CIAS UI.png

In the list of “Integration Solutions and Scenarios” locate and expand the “Business Data Cloud” solution:

2 - start CIAS wf generation.png

In the details pane you will see:

  • on the “Description” tab: a brief overview of SAP Business Data Cloud and of the features that will be enabled by setting up the integration with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition plus a list of prerequisites for the integration,
  • on the “Scenario Entities” tab: a list of system types that are involved in setting up the integration: SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, and SAP Cloud Connector (for federating the communication between SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition),
  • on the “Scenario Tasks” tab: an overview of the tasks that will be executed for setting up the integration.

Click the “Start” button to begin with the generation of a workflow.

As a first step, select the specific system tenants that you want to include in the integration. As there will be no manual tasks to be executed in SAP Business Data Cloud, in the next step assign the users that will be responsible for handling the tasks in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, and SAP Cloud Connector:

3 - select systems & assign users.png

As a final step review the summary information and click “Finish”. The generation of the workflow may take a short while (up to ~ 1-2 minutes).

Once the workflow generation is complete the tasks pertaining to the involved systems will appear in the respective user’s inbox in Cloud Integration Automation service. Click on “My Inbox” in the navigation pane or select the “My Inbox” tile on the Cloud Integration Automation service home screen.

In the “All Tasks” list you will see all manual tasks that have been assigned to your user and that are currently pending processing. If you don’t work on multiple workflows at the same time, the list usually contains only one task. Select the task that you want to work on next:

4 - sample task.png

Some tasks may require your input of configuration parameters – these will appear in the “Configuration Parameters” section of the “Task Instructions” tab (as shown in the example above). Under “Manual Instructions” you will find a description of how to obtain these parameters by using UIs in the system that is assigned to the task. In this case, the UI would be a transaction to be run in the client of the SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition system that you have selected previously for integration with SAP Business Data Cloud. Go to the “System Access” tab for details about how to access the system. On the “Overview” tab you can see where the present task fits into the complete workflow of setting up the integration.

When done click the “Complete Task” button. With this action the task status changes to “Completed” and the workflow resumes. The assigned users will then find the next pending manual task in their Cloud Integration Automation inbox.

of the progress of the integration setup workflow click “Monitor Integration Scenarios” in the navigation pane or choose the same name tile on the Cloud Integration Automation service home screen.

Choose the workflow that you are interested in from the list under “Integration Scenarios”:

6 - monitor wf progress.png

This will display a list of all tasks pertaining to the workflow with information about the applicable system, user assignment and status. For completed tasks the user who processed the task and the time when the task was completed is also shown.

The tasks in “Ready to be executed” status are the manual tasks that are currently distributed to users’ task inboxes. The “Not started” status indicates that the task cannot yet be processed due to prerequisite prior tasks still pending completion. Cloud Integration Automation service handles these dependencies such that the proper execution order is guaranteed.

To conclude, by sequentially completing all the tasks in line with the Cloud Integration Automation service guidelines, the integration of SAP Business Data Cloud with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition can be achieved with speed, transparency and with minimum effort with the tool guiding the user in an intuitive way at each component level to complete the integration.
