Phasmophobia’s cursed objects, also known as cursed items or (officially) cursed possessions, are items with unique supernatural abilities that can assist your investigation. There are seven cursed objects available in the game that can only be used inside the investigation area, with their perks ranging from resurrecting fallen players to helping you eliminate evidence. However, which of these supernatural items spawns, and the number of them that spawn, changes from contract to contract regardless of the difficulty level you’re playing (outside of custom), though each has a distinct spawn location for every map.

Using these items is optional, but they can be particularly useful when you’re stuck identifying a ghost, or at higher difficulty levels with less evidence. However, these cursed possessions also come with risks. Each has the potential to negatively impact gameplay, with possible side effects including cursed hunts, obscured vision, muffled hearing, sanity drain, and even death.

Some of the cursed objects pose more of a risk than others, and even if you don’t use them, it’s worth grabbing a picture of the ones you spot for extra XP and cash–but using them is much more fun and adds the object to your lobby trophy case. Below, we break down how to use all seven cursed possessions in Phasmophobia and their spawn locations for every map.

All cursed objects in Phasmophobia and how to use them

Monkey Paw

A player holds the Monkey Paw cursed object in their hand in Phasmophobia
The Monkey Paw giveth, but it also taketh away.

The Monkey Paw can grant wishes–but they always come at a cost. To use this cursed possession, pick it up and make a Monkey Paw wish via local voice chat or using the game’s text-based UI (sometimes the latter is easier). If the wish is successful, one of the fingers on the Monkey Paw will curl closed.

More Monkey Paw wishes are available at lower difficulty levels (five on 0x-1x) and fewer on higher levels (four between 1 and 2x, three on above 2x).  When all the fingers are curled, you cannot use the paw anymore. Each wish can only be made once, so don’t waste them.

Voodoo Doll

Phasmophobia player holds the Voodoo Doll in hand
Listen out for ghost interactions when you use the Voodoo Doll.

Using the Voodoo Doll is a great way to gather evidence on your ghost. The doll has 10 pins sticking out of it; each time you interact with it, one of them is pushed into its body, causing the ghost to interact with the environment. If you’re struggling to find the room, you can listen for the interaction to help narrow down your search. If you use the doll in the ghost room, your squad can have an EMF and/or UV ready to look for evidence. This makes it particularly useful when finding evidence to identify shy ghosts like the Shade.

Now for the drawbacks. Each time you push a pin into the doll, your sanity drops by 5%. If a pin goes into the doll’s heart, you lose 10% sanity, all remaining pins are pushed in (so the Voodoo Doll can no longer be used), and a cursed hunt is triggered. Cursed hunts are aggressive, longer-lasting hunts caused by using (or misusing) cursed objects. These hunts ignore sanity levels and hunt grace periods (the cooldown time between hunts), and cannot be prevented by smudging. A cursed hunt can also be triggered if you try to use the Voodoo Doll when you have 0% sanity.

Ouija Board

Phasmophobia's Ouija board active on a dining room table
Make sure to say “goodbye” when you’re finished with the Ouija Board.

The Ouija Board allows you to communicate directly with the ghost by asking it questions. To use this cursed possession, pick up the board and place it on a flat surface. Interact with the Ouija Board, and a planchette will drop onto the board to indicate it is now active. You can now ask Ouija Board questions using voice chat or the game’s text-based UI, though the latter has more limited options. If the question is recognized, then the planchette will move to answer it, indicating either ‘Yes’ or ‘No,’ or spelling out its response. If the planchette doesn’t move, the question wasn’t recognized or isn’t a valid one.

Every successful question you ask the Ouija Board (bar asking to play hide-and-seek) drains a certain percentage of your sanity. Questions and responses that are more likely to help you identify the ghost (like “where are you?”) zap more sanity than those that don’t (such as “when did you die?), with sanity drain ranging from 5% to 50%. So, make sure to note your sanity level before firing off a bunch.

It is critical that when you finish using the Ouija Board, you say or select “Goodbye” to safely deactivate it. If you don’t, and there are no players within five meters of the active board, it burns, then breaks, and a cursed hunt is triggered. This also happens if you ask a question that requires more sanity than you have, and when you ask to play hide-and-seek.

Music Box

Phasmophobia player holds the music box in hand
Don’t let the ghost get to close to you when you’re holding the Music Box.

If you need to find the ghost’s favorite room or capture media, such as a video or photo of the ghost for your objectives, the Music Box can be a huge help–if you use it right. When you interact with the Music Box, it will play music. If the ghost is within 20 meters of the box, it will start singing, so you can follow the sound to find its location. If the ghost is within five meters of the active Music Box, it triggers a ghost event during which the ghost appears and walks towards the music (and you can grab a video or photo).

However, using the Music Box can be extremely risky. A cursed hunt can be triggered if you have 0% sanity, drop (not place) the box while the music is playing, the ghost is within one meter of the Music Box while music is playing, or the ghost walks for more than five seconds during the five-meter ghost event. Also note players within three meters of an active box will suffer sanity drain of 2.6% per second, so staying within that range for the box’s full 30-second song can result in a maximum drain of 77%.

So, to safely use and discard the Music Box, first have a smudge and lighter ready, pop some sanity medication to ensure you’ve got more than 77% (ideally more), and a hiding spot picked out, to help you survive a potential cursed hunt–at least until you’re more confident using it.

If you want to use the Music Box to pinpoint the ghost’s favorite room, first try to locate the area of the map the ghost is lurking in–a parabolic microphone, or EMF can help with this when playing on larger maps–as this can help you narrow down the room options. Activate the box and wander until you hear the faint singing–indicating the ghost is within 20 meters–listening to the volume (make sure it doesn’t get too loud) and direction it’s coming from to help you identify the room. Place (as you would a ghost writing book) the box carefully on the floor, and quickly move into a hiding spot far away from both it and the ghost. If you’re brave, wander around with the active music box until the ghost visibly appears in front of you, then quickly place down the box and try to escape the almost inevitable cursed hunt.

If you know the ghost room, but want to use the Music Box to capture media, place motion sensors throughout the room so you know exactly where the ghost is and can avoid activating the box right on top of the ghost. Activate the Music Box, place it on the floor, move away from it, and snap a photo or video of the ghost when it manifests within five meters of the box–then try to escape.

Haunted Mirror

Phasmophobia player holds the Haunted Mirror which shows an image of a kitchen
The Haunted Mirror is very useful when you’re trying to find the ghost room.

The Haunted Mirror serves one purpose: showing you the ghost room. These dark, oval mirrors can sometimes be easy to miss, as they aren’t always on the wall and you may mistake them for a normal, non-spooky mirror. To use this cursed possession, pick it up, interact with it, and the glass will show a somewhat blurry live, panning feed of a room. This is the ghost’s favorite room, and while it can be straightforward to work out which it is from the mirror image on smaller maps with distinct rooms (like Tanglewood), it can be more challenging on larger maps (like Brownstone High School, which has numerous classrooms), so pay attention to the details of the room image, including decor, wall color, and other unique identifying features, as it’ll help you narrow down which room it is. You can also add equipment to suspected rooms and see whether they appear on the live mirror feed.

Like all cursed items in Phasmophobia, using the Haunted Mirror doesn’t come without its drawbacks. Every use of the mirror–each time you view the image–decreases sanity by 7.5% per second, or 20%, whichever is higher. So, make sure you have plenty of sanity before you use it and, if possible, try to use it just once and for a short period.

The Haunted Mirror can also break and trigger a cursed hunt if used by a player with less than 20% sanity, or if a player reaches 0% sanity while using it. Once it’s broken, you can’t use it anymore.

Summoning Circle

Phasmophobia Summoning Circle on the floor of a basement
Each Summoning Circle candle zaps 16% sanity, so make sure to top up first.

The Summoning Circle allows you to temporarily summon the ghost in physical form, making it useful when you need a photo or video of the ghost,  but it’s probably best left to intermediate and professional-level players.

This cursed item takes the form of a red satanic symbol on the floor, surrounded by five candles. To use the Summoning Circle, you need a lighter and a sanity level above 80%, but it’s also worth bringing a photo or video camera with you and a smudge, and identifying a nearby hiding spot, too. Light each of the candles around the Summoning Circle (each drains 16% sanity), and the ghost will appear in its physical form, trapped inside the circle for five seconds–during which time you can capture a picture or video.

Getting the media isn’t the hard part; it’s surviving after. Capture what you need as soon as the ghost appears, then run and hide, as a hunt will trigger as soon as it’s free. If you get found, break out your smudge. A hunt will also be instantly triggered if you light a red candle with less than 16% sanity. Should you dare to light the Summoning Circle when the ghost is hunting, it will teleport straight to you and instantly kill you.

Tarot Cards

Phasmophobia players holds the Tarot cards deck and shines a flashlight on a ghost's silhouette
Using the Tarot Cards is like playing supernatural russian roulette.

Using Phasmophobia’s Tarot Cards deck is essentially like playing a game of russian roulette. When you interact with this cursed possession, you pull a random card from the deck that has an effect on the ghost and players, which can either be positive or negative. There are 10 unique Tarot Cards in Phasmophobia, each with a distinct burning color and its own effects, with the latter ranging from instantly triggering a cursed hunt to reviving a dead player.

Each deck you find has 10 randomly generated cards in it, but this doesn’t mean you will get all of the unique cards available, and you may often pull the same card more than once from a deck.

There is a very useful Phasmophobia trick [link] that negates the negative effects of The Devil and Death cards, allowing you to avoid triggering a cursed hunt or ghost event, but it doesn’t stop The Hanged Man from instantly killing you.

All cursed object spawn locations in Sunny Meadows and Sunny Meadows Restricted

In Sunny Meadows and Sunny Meadows Restricted, all cursed possessions spawn in the same location: the Chapel. On the platform below the large crucifix in the Chapel is a large red symbol on the floor that looks similar to the Summoning Circle. This symbol has five smaller circles around its rim, in which five of the game’s cursed possessions can spawn (each occupying one circle): the Ouija Board, the Tarot Cards, the Voodoo Doll, and the Music Box. The Monkey Paw can then be found at the foot of the large, bloody crucifix, and the Summoning Circle (distinct from the larger symbol due to its candles) can be found inside the larger symbol. Keep in mind that, unless you’re on custom difficulty, it’s likely only one of these cursed items will spawn.

Haunted Mirror

Tarot Cards
