It would seem that Amflows are much like buses. You wait for ages, and then two come along at once!
Not long after we received the latest Amflow PX Carbon Pro, a brand spanking new PR Carbon Pro was being unloaded out of the local courier’s truck. I’ll be testing both of these bikes over the coming months, and will be using the opportunity to carry out some back-to-back testing to dig into the ride quality differences between the two.
Before we hit the dirt, let’s take a closer look at the cheaper PR Carbon to see why this could very well be the better option for more riders.
Amflow PR Carbon Overview
The Amflow PR Carbon is very similar to the PX Carbon, though it comes in at a cheaper price point and also features a removable battery (R = Removable).
Whereas the PX Carbon has a lighter weight 700Wh battery bolted inside its downtube, the PR Carbon gets a bigger 800Wh battery that can be easily removed using the included key. This allows you to charge it separately from where the bike is stored, which is crucial for some riders.
The PR Carbon and PX Carbon are otherwise designed for the same type of riding. They both have a 160mm travel fork, 150mm of rear travel and a mullet wheel setup out of the box. The carbon frame design is similar in shape, though the downtube on the PR Carbon is bulkier in order to accommodate the removable battery and necessary hardware.
According to Amflow, the frame is 500g heavier (2.9kg vs 2.4kg) and the battery is nearly a kilo heavier (4kg vs 3.18kg).
Geometry & Size Chart
Geometry is similar but not identical between the PR Carbon and PX Carbon. Here’s a look at some of the key numbers for our Medium size test bike and how they compare to the PX Carbon;
- Head Angle | 64.5° (vs 64.2°)
- Seat Angle | 77° (vs 78°)
- Reach | 452mm (vs 455mm)
- Stack | 626mm (vs 622mm)
- Rear Centre | 440mm (vs 438mm)
- BB Height | 349.5mm (vs 345.5mm)
Mashing those numbers together, you can expect the PR Carbon to have better ground clearance and be a little more upright in its riding position.
Having said that, the geometry on this bike is wildly adjustable. It shares the same features as the PX Carbon including modular headset cups, a shock mount flip chip, and a chainstay pivot flip chip. This allows you to tweak the angles, BB height and chainstay length to your preference, giving a crazy amount of possible combinations.
Price & Specifications
There are two models in the Amflow PR Carbon lineup.
The base level PR Carbon ($6,999 AUD) comes with an Avinox M2 motor, which delivers up to 125Nm of torque and 1,100W of peak power. It has a Fox AWL HD Sport fork and Float Rhythm shock, Tektro disc brakes, and a Maxxis Assegai/DHR II tyre combo. This bike is shipped with the standard Avinox 4A charger.
The more expensive PR Carbon Pro ($8,699 AUD) that we have on test here features the more powerful Avinox M2S motor. It also gets a Fox 36 fork and Float X shock, Magura Gustav Pro disc brakes, and Schwalbe Gravity Pro Radial casing tyres. This bike comes with the Avinox 12A fast charger.
The two models otherwise feature the same carbon frame, 800Wh removable battery, SRAM S1000 AXS Transmission, and Amflow finishing kit.
