If I can credit any video game for helping me fall in love with some of the best indie games, it’s Dead Cells. The roguelite Metroidvania blend captured my interest and stole countless hours from me, so I chased that same feeling for years, trying other indies and learning to appreciate the world beyond the triple-A hits. With Evil Empire, a developer that helped create post-launch content for Dead Cells and was founded by developers from Motion Twin, taking on a modern take on Castlevania, I was all in. Even better, you can get it at a discount before it’s even available.
At a glance, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse looks strikingly familiar. It’s a side-scrolling Metroidvania that, in reality, doesn’t differ too much from Dead Cells or the original Castlevania games (where did you think the “-vania” part came from?). However, it’s a smooth, swift take on the series, with new protagonist Rose Belmont moving around like an acrobat. In familiar territory for the franchise, Rose is a vampire hunter, much like her father Trevor, and as the pair patrol the streets of Paris, they’re soon wrapped up in a sinister conspiracy.
Much like her bloodline, Rose is skilled in combat, able to deal with a variety of creatures with ease. Her swiftness makes the combat, at least in the trailers, look fast, but with enough style that each attack lands with a flourish. As you defeat various bosses, they become sealed in Rose’s Tarot Cards, meaning you can use their own skills against the hordes of enemies you’ll face. The weapon of my enemy is my friend, I believe the saying goes.
Like previous games, and with Evil Empire’s Dead Cells expertise behind it, the long-running series’ latest entry will likely have plenty of levels to explore, secrets to uncover, and unique ways to traverse the world as you return to previously explored areas. That’s a staple of the genre, of course, and with the stunning design that the new game looks to deliver, I’m looking forward to hunting down vampires once again.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is already well-priced at its listed price, but right now, you can pre-order the game for just $22.49 / £18.73 at Fanatical, getting you a Steam key for 25% off.
