To many’s surprise, Black Myth: Wukong turned out to be a great action-RPG when it launched in 2024. Drenched in a beautiful interpretation of Chinese mythology and an ambitious debut from Game Science, the stars aligned for it in a way that every developer entering the crowded space could hope for. If you haven’t tried this excellent adventure with the Destined One, now’s your chance, as it’s cheaper than ever.
Inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, you play as the Destined One, a mysterious monkey warrior tasked with recovering six relics tied to the senses of the legendary Sun Wukong. The Monkey King has been sealed in stone on Mount Huaguo for centuries, setting you off on a journey filled with mythical creatures, enormous bosses, and plenty of staff-based bonking.
Admittedly, for someone who hasn’t read or isn’t familiar with the novel, it can be somewhat confusing when you initially play the game. However, you don’t really need to understand the story to enjoy the adventure. Black Myth: Wukong’s levels are beautiful set pieces that hold the best part of the game: the combat.
Black Myth: Wukong takes inspiration from the best soulslikes, with intense combat that feels like a dance routine that, initially, you have absolutely no idea how to perform. As you jump around and dodge nimbly with your staff, the enemies feel relentless. However, that’s the beauty of Wukong: You’ll inevitably fail, but that’s okay. It’s all practice for the excellent boss battles that are coming up.
While some of Wukong’s many, many bosses are a bit poor in design, the overall consensus—including my own—is that it has some of the best boss fights in recent video games. I don’t want to spoil them, but some of the late-game encounters are cinematic and require a lot of skill to beat. After you’ve spent the entire game learning the combat, finally overcoming them feels genuinely rewarding. You’re in for a treat—or a pellet, I suppose.
A big discount on Black Myth: Wukong isn’t common, but fortunately, that time has come again. Right now, you can get a Steam key for the game for just $40.19 / £33.49 at Fanatical, making it cheaper than Steam’s lowest price for Game Science’s smash hit. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to buy a copy, well, it’s arrived.
Now, if you don’t mind me, I’ve been waiting to do a replay ahead of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, and I think it’s time for another playthrough.
