If you plan on using Longswords in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, it’s a good idea to know what the top 10 best ones are.

There are dozens of different Longswords in this game, after all. Plus, the game’s leveling quirks also make it so that timing is also an important factor for picking up these weapons. Get a weapon while your level is low, and it will permanently scale to you, locking you with a weaker variant forevermore…

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the top 10 Longswords and how to obtain them!

Top 10 Longswords | The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

A Note on Leveled Weapons

Before we begin, we want to remind you that most weapons in this game are leveled. What that means is, the weapon’s power depends on your character’s level upon acquiring it. Generally, leveled weapons get bumped up a tier in stats every 5 Levels, usually maxing out at either Level 25 (base game) or Level 30 (Shivering Isles). Higher tiers increase Base Damage and Weight.

In cases where this applies, we will list the stats for Level 25 or Level 30 as relevant and put them in parentheses to let you know.

On the topic of stats, remember that your Blade Skill will lower or increase the damage of Longswords depending on your Skill Level. You can also increase damage past the Base Damage if you repair the weapon to 125% Condition. However, that will require you to have the Armorer Skill at Expert (75) or higher.

With that said, let’s dive into our list of the top 10 Longswords from worst to best in Oblivion Remastered!

#10 – Elven Longsword

Base Damage: 18

Weight: 36.0

How to Obtain: appears as random loot once you reach Level 9 and in shops at Level 13.

The Elven Longsword is a fairly humble weapon, and you’ll be able to get it easily before long. Its biggest strength is actually the fact that it’s a common and generic longsword. That allows you to use the game’s Enchanting system to give it special effects, which you can’t do with unique weapons! So, this sword earns a spot due to its customizable nature and decent base stats.

#9 – Glass Longsword

Base Damage: 20

Weight: 40.0

How to Obtain: frequently used by bandits once you reach Level 12.

Next up is another generic Longsword, which means it has the same Enchanting potential as the Elven Longsword. However, the Glass Longsword is a straight upgrade as it does a bit more damage and is also a pretty common find in the game. It does weigh a bit more, so keep that in mind.

#8 – Ebony Longsword

Base Damage: 22

Weight: 44.0

How to Obtain: can be found randomly in the world and from looting enemies once you reach Level 16.

Next on our list is the next leveled generic Longsword, a step up from the Glass Longsword. It starts appearing later in the game and weighs a bit more, but it has a higher base damage. As long as your carry capacity isn’t an issue, this is a straight upgrade!

#7 – Daedric Longsword

Base Damage: 24

Weight: 48.0

How to Obtain: obtained as random loot once you reach Level 20. It can also be found during the “An Unexpected Voyage” quest at Level 19 or higher.

This is the last of the generic Longswords in our list, and also the strongest. In fact, a Daedric Longsword with the right Enchantments can potentially outdo all of the unique Longswords we’re going to talk about next! What really makes this less desirable, however, is the random nature of its spawns and the fact that you can usually only find them after Level 20.

#6 – Blackwater Blade

Base Damage: 24 (Level 25+)

Weight: 48.0 (Level 25+)

Enchantment: Absorb Fatigue on Strike (20 points for 12 seconds)

How to Obtain: complete “An Unexpected Voyage.”

This is the first unique Longsword on our list, and it’s also a leveled weapon. As we mentioned earlier in the article, that means that this weapon is best when you obtain it at Level 25 or higher!

What makes this weapon shine is the Absorb Fatigue Enchantment. Not only does it weaken the foe it hits while recovering your own Fatigue, but it also briefly staggers enemies. That makes it particularly powerful when fighting single targets and is solid for every type of melee build in the game.

#5 – Honorblade of Chorrol

Base Damage: 23

Weight: 0 (Quest Item)

How to Obtain: obtained during “Sins of the Father.” Don’t complete the quest to keep the sword.

Next up on our top 10 Longswords list in Oblivion Remastered, the Honorblade of Chorrol is a bit of a quirky one. The Honorblade of Chorrol is counted as a quest item, as it’s required to complete the “Sins of the Father” quest. However, you can keep and use this Longsword for as long as you want. Just don’t turn it in to progress the quest and it’s yours!

While it does have slightly lower Base Damage than the Daedric Longswords and the Blackwater Blade, it is classified as a quest item so it has 0 Weight. So, as long as you don’t finish the quest, you have a weightless but damaging Longsword! It can be enchanted, too.

#4 – Perfect Madness Longsword

Base Damage: 25

Weight: 50

Enchantment: Damage Health (20 points). Enchantment is only added if you provide a Madness Matrix when crafting.

How to Obtain: obtain it through the “The Antipodean Hammer” quest at Level 23 or higher.

The first thing we want to recommend with this weapon is being careful about how you obtain it, if you plan to use it. It’s best to wait until Level 23 and not provide any Madness Matrix during the relevant quest. This will ensure that you get an unenchanted Perfect variant, which is ideal.

If you do that, you’ll have a blank slate enchantable Longsword with better Base Damage than even the Daedric Longsword. It’s quite heavy, as is to be expected, but it’s definitely one of the best Longswords you can get in the game!

#3 – Goldbrand

Base Damage: 25

Weight: 52

Enchantment: Fire Damage (22 points)

How to Obtain: complete the “Boethia” quest, which can be done once you’re Level 20 or higher.

Taking the third spot on our list is the Goldbrand, which is technically the best Longsword in terms of pure raw damage. Having 25 Base Damage combined with a very potent Fire Damage enchantment results in the best raw damage output out of all Longswords in the game. If you just want damage and don’t care about anything else, this is your best bet. Especially if you get it as soon as you hit Level 20!

It does have a couple of drawbacks that prevent it from getting higher up on this list, however. Mainly, the fact that it doesn’t provide as much utility and is obtained fairly late into the game. Still, it does have the best pure damage by far!

#2 – Dawnfang and Duskfang

Base Damage: 25 (Level 30)

Weight: 47.0 (Level 30)

Enchantments (Level 30):

Dawnfang – Fire Damage (15 points)

Duskfang – Frost Damage (15 points)

Dawnfang Superior – Fire Damage (15 points), Absorb Health (7 pts for 1 sec)

Duskfang Superior – Frost Damage (15 points), Absorb Magicka (7 pts for 1 sec)

All Variants – Nourish Blade. This unique Enchantment will upgrade your weapon to a Superior variant when it swaps forms if you have killed at least 12 people with the current form.

How to Obtain: complete the “Baiting the Trap” quest as part of the Shivering Isles questline.

This is one of the most unique Longswords in Oblivion Remastered, so it definitely deserves its spot in our top 10 list. It’s the Dawnfang during the daytime (6 am to 6 pm) and the Duskfang during nighttime (6 pm to 6 am). As we mentioned before, the Nourish Blade effect also allows it to become a Superior version when switching if you have killed 12 people with its current form.

What’s even better about the blade’s form swapping is that it also recharges its Enchantments and repairs the blade when it happens. So, for example, a 0% Condition Dawnfang will become a 100% Condition Duskfang once the clock hits 6 pm! In essence, that means you never have to repair or recharge this Longsword.

To top all of that uniqueness, the Dawnfang/Duskfang also have a better Base Damage-to-Weight ratio than most other Longswords. It definitely earned a spot high in this list! The only big downside is that you need to be Level 30 to get the variant with the best stats possible.

#1 – Umbra

Base Damage: 28

Weight: 45.0

Enchantment: Soul Trap (120 seconds)

How to Obtain: kill and loot Umbra or complete the “Clavicus Vile” quest.

The Umbra is a bit of a special case, which is why it earns the top spot on our list of the 10 best Longswords in Oblivion Remastered.

While the Umbra doesn’t really have the best stats and enchantments later in the game, it has a combination of unique quirks. The first being that it’s not leveled. As such, it doesn’t matter whether you get the Umbra at Level 1 or Level 20. It will always have the same stats! Its damage does scale with your Blade Skill like all other Longswords, of course.

The second unique quirk, which goes along with the first, is that you can get this Longsword from the very beginning of the game. This has made it a popular early game item to rush toward for decades, which is why it’s popularly considered the best!

If you want to know how to get it, check out our full guide on how to get the Umbra. We do recommend waiting until you’re Level 15 for optimal results, however, as that will improve the armor you get alongside the sword. If you don’t care about the armor, though, Umbra is a solid pick-up even at Level 1.

Nonetheless, that’s the end of our list of the top 10 best longswords in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Now you know which Longswords are worthwhile and how to get them!
