We finally got the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and fans have mixed reactions. Although the game feels sloppy, and it got a relatively low review score, fans are happy because it is a step in the right direction.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A was released on October 16, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, but we all knew a lot of things about the game a few days earlier, as multiple leaks surfaced, and one of the biggest data leaks, named “Freakleak,” was released early, exposing over 70GB of materials.
But never mind that, what about Pokémon Legends: Z-A? Well, the game is not perfect, but there are some interesting aspects. First of all, it continues the experiment of the Legend subseries (following Pokémon Legends: Arceus) with new and refreshing mechanics, new settings, and we start to see a higher focus on real-time interaction.

However, it seems like developers have spent the majority of their time designing NPC conversations, just because there are some wild ones. Either they spent a lot of time trying to add secret meanings to NPC conversations, or an AI chatbot has gone rogue.
Some lines are so wild that you stop for a second, confused about what’s going on. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is centered around your journey to Lumiose City, which is a vibrant metropolis set in the Kalos Region.
So, you’ll notice some strange conversations with NPCs along the way. That’s why this has become a meme trend on social media, as people are sharing the strangest lines they see.

Weirdest NPC Conversations in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
If you follow gaming discourse (especially Twitter/X or TikTok), you might’ve seen posts lately of NPC dialogue from Pokémon Legends: Z-A that are… surprisingly spicy, existential, or just plain bizarre.

Lines like:
“If I’m upset, giving my partner’s Poké Ball a little squeeze helps.”
“I’m sick and tired of this life. I just want to smell Pokémon!”
“People, Pokémon… we’re all going to die someday, aren’t we?”
These weren’t crafted as memes, but players quickly began sharing them under the hashtag or label “legendary NPC dialogue.”
The idea: these are throw-away lines from in-game NPCs (non-player characters)—villagers, kids, random travelers, people in the world. You think their dialogue is going to be innocuous or “video-gamey,” but instead, some lines feel like they’re from late-night texts you regret sending or the chat of someone very deep (or very disturbed). That contrast is the fuel.
One of the earliest examples that kicked this off was posted within minutes of the game’s release (or at least very soon after). The tweet showed a line that read: “You can’t change the nickname of a Pokémon you got in a trade. Urk. I’m so sorry for giving a weird name to the Pokémon I traded you.”

From there, people started screenshotting all kinds of NPC quotes and tossing them online. Some are wholesome, some are cringe, some are weird, some are dark. But the shared thread is: they take you by surprise.
So the “trend” is basically fans compiling and sharing random lines from NPCs and, in effect, turning them into memes or odd micro-stories.
Examples That Stood Out
A few lines in particular caught on heavily:
An NPC says, “If I’m upset, giving my partner’s Poké Ball a little squeeze helps.” This one got lots of attention for being borderline suggestive. What do you think it means?
Another: “I’m sick and tired of this life. I just want to smell Pokémon!”
Then there’s the darker one: “People, Pokémon… we’re all going to die someday, aren’t we?” That one leans more into unexpected philosophy from a random NPC.
Even a less dramatic one: “I forget what we learned in school but I remember Pokémon’s names!” – I saw people quote that one as “me in real life.”
A lot of these lines are short in-game jokes or filler dialogue, but once you isolate them, they almost become standalone poetry or one-liners.

Could This Be a Design Choice?
It’s natural to wonder: did Game Freak / the Pokémon team do this intentionally? Are they writing “weird NPCs” knowing they’ll go viral?
My take is: probably not to this degree. I suspect the devs’ goal was to make a rich world with lots of small flavor dialogue. Some of it will be bland, some quirky. Honestly, some of them shouldn’t be in kids E10+ games, or there is something wrong with my mind, I don’t know.

However, knowing the fandom’s appetite, devs might lean into it in future updates. We could see patch notes that remove or soften lines, or conversely, more of them sprinkled in, if they see the social media buzz is helping publicity.
There’s also a possibility of translation or localization oddities. Some lines might read more… “strange” when translated or when line breaks shift emphasis. But I don’t think this is a translation issue. It was done intentionally, that’s for sure.
