What’s new with GRIP X2

Fox has updated its GRIP X2 damper, refining the internals to improve oil flow, sensitivity and control for gravity riding.

As the updated X2 damper is unchanged on the outside, we’re using the current bits for these photos.

For this update, Fox has focused on improving how the damper manages oil flow.

According to Fox, the revised GRIP X2 features updated valving, larger ports and changes to the internal layout aimed at increasing oil flow and reducing damping lag. The goal is to improve sensitivity without reducing support.

New GRIP X2 | A more damper-led approach

One of the more interesting points from Fox’s presentation to us is how it’s thinking about the fork as a system.

Fox repeated to us that they are putting more emphasis on a damper-led design, where the GRIP X2 is responsible for delivering support and control, rather than relying on friction or unintended resistance elsewhere in the chassis. An interesting point indeed.

The updated damper is already featured on the Podium fork, suggesting where Fox is heading with its gravity suspension.


That’s part of the reasoning behind the changes to oil flow. If the damper can move oil more freely and respond more quickly, it can manage impacts more consistently without needing to rely on harshness to hold the bike up.

In simple terms, Fox is trying to separate support from harshness.

GRIP X2 | What you’re looking at here

These renders show where Fox has changed the GRIP X2 internally.

The older assembly uses a more conventional round-valve layout. In the updated version, the easiest differences to spot are the cut rebound valves at the top, the reshaped mid-valve housing beneath them, and the more open-looking passages through the piston and valve assembly. Super-tech stuff, we get it. We did our best to keep up during the presentation and hope we can explain things in simple terms.

What Fox is highlighting here is the oil path.

In a damper like this, oil is forced through ports and shim stacks to control how fast the fork compresses and rebounds. By opening up those routes and reducing restriction, Fox is aiming to let oil move more freely through the system.

The visual takeaway is a damper with a less obstructed path for oil, particularly around the mid-valve and rebound circuit. That’s the area Fox says helps the fork react faster, with less lag and less spike when dealing with repeated hits.

GRIP X2 | What we should expect

The updated GRIP X2 will appear across Fox’s 36, 38, Podium and 40 forks. Turns out we’ve been riding the new damper for a year already, in the Podium. Sly Fox people left that detail out when introducing the Podium, and we’re not ones to open a damper for a quick look-see.

It is still the same four-way HSC, LSC, HSR and LSR concept, and it remains the gravity damper used across the 36, 38, Podium and 40.

Double rebound dials on the underside provide high levels of tuneability.

The expected difference is a fork that feels calmer over repeated hits, smoother on square edges and less harsh as speeds increase, while still maintaining the support that defines GRIP X2.

The old version was already highly tunable. This update is about refining how it responds to impacts, with a cleaner, more consistent feel.

The GRIP X2 retains its four-way adjustability, allowing riders to fine-tune high- and low-speed compression and rebound.

Rather than adding new adjustment features, this update focuses on improving how the damper behaves. The result, according to Fox, is a damper that delivers more grip and control while reducing rider fatigue on longer descents.
