[[{“value”:”Laptops are now K-shaped. At Computex we’re seeing companies like Dell and Acer try to compete with the MacBook Neo, but they’re all falling short, even with those new lower-cost WildCat Lake processors from Intel. The entry point for a new Windows laptop in 2026 and later appears to be $700 US dollars…and it’s coming with just 8GB of RAM.
That hurts Windows a lot more than it hurts MacOS. Personally I just can’t recommend anyone try to use Windows 11 on less than 16 gigs, even if they have to go for a used or refurbished laptop to hit that target. On the other end of things, we’ve got Intel and AMD duking it out for the premium space, now joined by Nvidia with its Arm-based RTX Spark platform. This is genuinely cool tech, offering what could be earth-shattering integrated graphics…but I’m guessing pricess will start at around $2000 USD, maybe a little less. Not exactly anywhere near accessible territory.
There appears to be a big hole in between these broad market spaces, mirroring the larger K-shaped economy. With RAM and storage continually being gobbled up by the “AI” industry, we can expect this to be the status quo for another year, possibly more. For the first time in my life, computers are going backwards, at least in terms of value and capability.
