[[{“value”:”As the dance style named after them would imply, most robots—even those designed to mimic humans—tend to be pretty stiff. Hoping to build something more versatile, researchers decided to ditch the fixed rods used in many robot frames and instead drew inspiration from developing bone.

Their design, described earlier this year in Science Advances, incorporates linked inflatable structures that expand to up to four times their original size. “GrowHR” can reach a maximum height of 1.36 meters, while also shrinking down to squeeze through gaps (or fit into boxes). In addition to walking, it can also do the splits, allowing it to crawl along the floor like a caterpillar, and muster enough force to kick a football.

Weighing in at just 4.5 kilograms, GrowHR is light enough to be carried through the air by a drone. The buoyant bot can swim to the aid of a drowning person and, when equipped with fins, can even “walk” on water at a speed of 16 millimeters per second. This lightweight, inflatable design also means GrowHR can safely interact with humans, including children—and makes the robot eminently huggable.

The best part? It does it all with a smile.
