A modern development experience for ABAP developers with Visual Studio Code, AI assistance, and cloud-ready tooling.

Introduction

For more than a decade, ABAP Development Tools (ADT) for Eclipse has been the standard Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for ABAP developers. It introduced a modern way to develop ABAP applications compared to the classic SAP GUI-based SE80 Workbench.

Today, SAP is taking another significant step in its developer journey.

With the introduction of ABAP Development Tools for Visual Studio Code (VS Code), SAP is bringing ABAP development to one of the world’s most popular code editors. This move aligns ABAP development with modern software engineering practices, cloud-native development, Git-based workflows, and AI-assisted coding.

Whether you are building applications in SAP BTP ABAP Environment, S/4HANA, or working with ABAP Cloud, Visual Studio Code provides a lightweight, extensible, and developer-friendly experience.

Why Visual Studio Code?

Visual Studio Code has become the preferred editor for millions of developers worldwide because of its speed, flexibility, and extensive extension ecosystem.

Many SAP developers already use VS Code for:

  • SAPUI5

  • CAP (Cloud Application Programming Model)

  • JavaScript & TypeScript

  • Node.js

  • Git

  • Markdown

  • YAML

  • Docker

  • Kubernetes

Now, with the official ABAP Development Tools extension, developers can use the same editor for both frontend and backend development, reducing context switching and improving productivity.

What is ABAP Development Tools for VS Code?

ABAP Development Tools for Visual Studio Code is SAP’s official extension that enables developers to create, edit, debug, test, and manage ABAP Cloud development directly from Visual Studio Code.

The extension supports modern ABAP development scenarios while integrating seamlessly with SAP’s cloud-first strategy and AI-powered development experience through SAP Joule.

Key Features

The initial release already includes many capabilities that developers use every day.
