CD Projekt Red has showcased the first look at Songs of the Past, which serves as the third expansion for The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. This expansion was briefly highlighted during Gamescom Opening Night Live, and GameSpot was also able to attend a hands-off presentation, where we learned all about Songs of the Past’s Dandelion-centered storyline.
CD Projekt Red returns to its fantasy-themed action-RPG after over a decade, and the developer says this expansion takes Geralt on one last ride “before passing the torch.”
Songs of the Past takes Geralt to Letten, which is the hometown of Dandelion, his friendly bard companion from the base game. We were shown a main quest called “A Bed of Thorns,” where Geralt finds Dandelion’s one-of-a-kind lute, and he quickly realizes that his friend could be in danger.
Letten is a fully open-world location, where players can roam freely, but the main questline will eventually lead them to a meeting with Dandelion’s cousin, Lilla. She appears to be a potential love interest for Geralt, assuming players want to explore the relationship.
One of Geralt’s previous love interests could make an appearance in Songs of the Past. During an interaction with Lilla, the developer had Geralt downplay the moment with a less affectionate reaction, citing they were “team Yen,” referring to Yennefer of Vengerberg. But that might just suggest some players will remain faithful, rather than any new love triangles emerging by having Yen appear.
Similarly to Geralt, Lilla also believes Dandelion to be in trouble, and from the mission we learn the hunt for the bard involves a cursed well. Lilla accompanies Geralt in his search, leading him to this cursed location in Letten called “The Garden of Thorns.”
The mission includes some combat segments, one of which is a boss encounter with an enemy called the Slumbering Knight. This was a skeleton covered in roots, and the enemy was able to block and attack with extensions of these roots. The developer said to expect some familiar Witcher 3 enemies as well.
Of course, we didn’t see how the quest ended for Geralt, but players will be able to play and learn the fate of Dandelion when Songs of the Past releases next year.
Based on our preview, Songs of the Past looks like a fully-fleshed out expansion. Geralt’s last adventure should still be a worthy investment for players who have already dumped plenty of hours into the Witcher 3, but it also looks like a beautiful upgrade for players looking to jump in for the first time.
It’s also worth mentioning that The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is getting a full remaster, and this upgraded edition is free for all players who own the base game. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt Remastered includes the two previous expansions, and this free upgrade is packed with several improvements, including visual upgrades, smoother combat, new finishers.
All of the enhancements will also be included for Songs of the Past, and Geralt definitely looks great with the new tech. From our preview, I can confirm Songs of the Past looks gorgeous. It’s exactly the same look and feel you’d expect from a Witcher game, but it has the graphical makeover to put the game more in line with modern competitors.
Our previewed mission showcased enhanced textures for clothing, armor, and tons of other added details. The water around Letten was more realistic, and players should also expect improved foliage and better rendering of the fog and background details.
CD Projekt Red’s design lead Miles Tost revealed the NPCs are upgraded to make the world feel more alive. Letten has several townsfolk roaming around, doing their daily chores, and sheep and other livestock wander the area with intention.
In terms of size, Tost said that Songs of the Past is comparable to the Blood and Wine expansion, which offered about 20 hours of additional content for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This should include plenty of new adventures to keep players busy until The Witcher 4 eventually arrives.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered launches on September 29 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and the Songs of the Past expansion will arrive sometime in 2027.
