Bungie may have stopped development on Destiny 2, but that doesn’t mean that it’s over. Like the first game, its servers are still live and fairly active, and with Destiny 2’s excellent expansions, there are hundreds of hours of content waiting for both New Lights and returning Guardians to enjoy. As someone who has bought every expansion at release, seeing the entire Destiny 2 collection at 75% off is a remarkable deal, and one that I wholly recommend.
I’ve got over 2,000 hours across both Destiny games, making them my second- and third-most-played games behind Minecraft. Even 12 years later, I still look back on the original fondly, and I’ve been a day-one player of both entries. It’s hard to put into words what makes Destiny so special, but I’ve got plenty of explanations for why Destiny 2 is one of the best FPS games ever–and why this deal shouldn’t be overlooked.
You play as a Guardian (basically a superpower “Light”-wielding, gunslinging space wizard/warrior/assassin, depending on the class you pick). After being revived by the ever-present Traveler, you need to kill a bunch of bad guys. However, while you slay hordes of Hive, deal with the villainous Vex, or, well, the rest of the solar system’s enemies, you’ll uncover universe-spanning mysteries. The lore is deep, but you don’t have to go deep into it to have a good time; it’s definitely exciting if you decide to.
While Destiny 2 itself is free-to-play (so you can go try it and see if you like it first), the expansions add a ridiculous amount of content, and personally, I wouldn’t play it without them anymore. Beyond Light adds the Darkness, the counterpart to the Light that powers Guardians, as the energy source for a new character subclass, while the excellent The Witch Queen sees you deal with Savathûn, one of the Hive gods, voiced by the brilliant Debra Wilson. Lightfall adds the Strand subclass, which is pretty much the best part of the DLC, admittedly, but it all leads into The Final Shape, which, safe to say, is Destiny’s peak.
I won’t spoil the Light and Darkness Saga’s final DLC, the culmination of a decade of Destiny storytelling. What I will say is that it represents every reason I love Bungie’s world. The missions are amazing, the locations are beautiful, and the narrative proves exactly why the two games have captured millions of players. Our The Final Shape review gave it a 9/10, with Phil Hornshaw saying, “The Final Shape takes everything that’s good about Destiny […] and brings them all together in ways the game has generally struggled to in the past.”
I’ve bought every DLC at full price and never regretted it. However, when you have potentially thousands of hours of content at such a discounted price, it’s well worth giving it a chance. Right now, Destiny 2: The Collection (which includes everything in the game besides that pesky vaulted content) is just $19.24 / £15.94 at Fanatical. If you pour even half as much time as I did–say, 500 hours–that works out to about three cents per hour. Hard to not call that a bargain.
Also, do yourself a favor and be a Warlock. I’ve spent the last decade maining the wizarding Guardian class, and I’m thankful I started back in the first Destiny with it. If you’re already a Warlock main, good on ya.
