Marvel Snap’s New Season Flips Heroes And Villains, Making One Card Obscenely Overpowered

The start of a new season in Marvel Snap is almost here, and in September, everything you know about your favorite superheroes is being thrown out of the window. This month, developer Second Dinner is drawing inspiration from the 2014 crossover series, Axis: Inversion. This storyline saw the Avengers, X-Men, and several supervillains team up to take down the Red Skull, who had recently powered up by stealing the brain of the deceased Charles Xavier, eventually evolving into Red Onslaught–don’t worry, Charles eventually got better.

After the Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange wove a spell that accidentally reversed the moral compass of everyone in the vicinity, the Inversion era of Marvel Comics began, resulting in heroes dipping into their darker sides and villains embracing the light–for a few months, at least. Marvel Snap’s new season is all about that weird time in the Marvel Universe, with cards that reflect the inverted nature of their characters through both abilities and stats.

Ever wondered what would happen if Iron Man sold expensive nanomachine subscription services for the vainglorious or what Spider-Man villain Carnage would be like as a hero? These cards are a glimpse into those wild changes.

As a reminder, the popular Draft Mode will also be back this month with Sanctum scoring rules (September 28 – October 11), and for more on what you can expect this month, here’s a closer look at all the new cards and locations debuting during the Axis: Inversion month.

New September Axis: Inversion Cards in Marvel Snap

Superior Iron Man

This month’s Premium Pass card is the Superior Iron Man, a morally inverted version of the armored Avenger. Cost reductions are doubled for Superior Iron Man, and it has the Ongoing ability to double any power increases. Essentially, the card doubles both flat discounts and power buffs, and there are plenty of strategies for using it to buff your deck. Stacking dual-value cards and targeted hand-buffs could make him an absolute game-changer on Turn Six, and he’ll likely pair very well with Phastos, Mother Askani, Sera, and Psylocke.

It all comes down to timing, but playing America Chavez and empowering him with a +3 power boost will transform him into a 5/13 card, and adding both Gwenpool and Okoye to your deck should help increase the chances of drawing an overpowered version of Iron Man. If you’re already dreading running into him this season, you’ll want to start adding a few counters to your deck, like Shadow King (reset his power back to default), Enchantress (nullify all Ongoing abilities at the card location where she’s played), Rogue (has the ability to steal Ongoing abilities), and Mobius M. Mobius to pin Superior Iron Man down to five-cost.

Anti-Polar Magneto

For owners of the Super Premium Pass, you can use this Magneto variant to quickly populate your zones. Anti-Polar Magneto has the On-Reveal ability to add a single three- or four-cost card from your hand to each location. This means that players can drop cards with typically strict placement conditions–like Cull Obsidian, Crossbones, and Drax–to a location on Turn Six, and other cards in this energy-cost bracket, like Silver Surfer and Shang Chi, could help win a match at the last minute.

Red Onslaught

Red Onslaught leads the charge for new cards that can be acquired via Seasonal Series 5 Snap Packs. The ultimate version of the Red Skull, Red Onslaught, has three random Ongoing abilities once played. As a four-energy card, that makes him a low-cost option for upending your opponent’s strategy, but that randomness could be a double-edged sword.

Kluh

The inverted version of the Hulk, Kluh, has an On Reveal ability to give a card in each player’s hand -1 cost for each different Cost among cards in play. Since he’s a five-cost card, there’s a good chance you could make a high-cost card in your hand a freebie if you’ve been playing your characters numerically throughout the match.

Rogue: Scion of Division

While Rogue normally steals the Ongoing ability of a card once she has been played to a location, this new variant sounds like the perfect counter to Superior Iron Man or other six-cost cards if you can get her out on the field early. Rogue: Scion of Division steals the text of the highest-cost card in your opponent’s hand, which should make her a menace for anyone running Knull or Onslaught decks, if she’s played on turn four or five.

Friendly Neighborhood Carnage

What would happen if Carnage decided to stop being a mass murderer and become a hero instead? Weird stuff, as in the comics, his inversion to the side of good saw him save the day and massively confuse people. Friendly Neighborhood Carnage will move all cards to the right at the location where he’s played and gain +2 power for each one he shifts. The low cost and decent power boost should make him a natural fit for move decks running cards like The Human Torch, Dagger, and Spider-Man 2099.

Scarlet Witch: Queen of Chaos

Scarlet Witch: Queen of Chaos could be a lifesaver with her ability, as she’ll add an “extremely” random skill card to your hand that will cost nothing to play on the next turn. Of course, there’s no telling what that skill card will be or if it’ll be useful for your current match, but hey, free is free!

New Series 4 cards

Entropic Havok

  • Available starting September 16
  • Each turn, steal one bonus energy from your opponent (if they have any)

The Inversion

  • Available starting September 28
  • On Reveal: Invert the Power of the lowest-Power card(s) here (positive becomes negative and vice versa)

New locations

The new locations for September–Stark Island and Jean Grey School–should work nicely with Superior Iron Man and move-focused decks.

Stark Island

End of Turn: Give a card in each hand -1 Cost–premieres September 9

Jean Grey School

On turn 5, cards here are moveable–premieres September 23.
