While the dodging, slicing, and carving of your standard Monster Hunter affair is great fun, the Monster Hunter Stories spin-off series gives you more to love about this… monster-hunting world. Instead of grinding for materials to create stronger builds, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection puts a greater focus on narrative, with gameplay that resembles Pokemon rather than the familiar action-RPG style of the mainline entries. If you want to give this under-loved spin-off a shot, you have the chance to get it and two other Steam games for under $5 in Fanatical’s latest bundle.
Instead of playing as a hunter in this spin-off of one of the best RPG series around, you play as a Rider, and instead of carving up the carcasses of those bountiful hunts, you’ll be bonding with and raising monsters to become, effectively, your pets. The narrative sees you caught between two warring countries, but then you find an egg containing a thought-to-be-extinct Rathalos, which seems promising. Until, well, it’s a pair of Rathalos (Rathalosi?) that are fated to bring about the end of the world. Fun times.
As I mentioned before, the combat isn’t what Monster Hunter fans will expect. Battles are turn-based affairs that see monsters duke it out, while the focus is on treating the world with respect instead of dealing with monsters in more… violent ways. It’s a lovely change from the usual Monster Hunter routine, and for that reason, it feels distinct enough that, while I wait for the Monster Hunter Wilds DLC, I don’t feel like I’m playing just another game from the series.
It’s no surprise that our Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection review is so positive, with Jake Dekker saying that the game “easily stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the best Monster Hunter games” and giving it a 9/10 score. Not enough fans of the franchise have given it a chance, and, well, now’s the opportunity to fix that mistake.
Right now, you have a chance at getting Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection and two other games for just $5 / £5 with the Fanatical VIP Mystery Bundle Capcom Edition. While it’s only a chance at getting this excellent RPG, you still get some bangers to add to your Steam library, including at least one Capcom game, as well as Fanatical-curated games. The non-Capcom titles have a Very Positive rating or higher with at least 1,000 reviews on Steam, so you know you’re in for a treat.
