Titan Quest 2, the sequel that many fans of the old ARPG titan have been waiting for, is now out in early access. Although it is still missing a lot of content and is in need of quite a lot more polishing, nothing is stopping people from flooding in and checking it out for themselves. If you are planning on trying the game, whether or not you are a veteran, here are a few tips to keep in mind that might help you out!
Titan Quest 2 – 10 Tips & Tricks to Know Before Playing
Before we get started, just remember that the game is still very much in early access, and so much of the game is still missing even if you look past how we only have the first act at the moment. It will be this way until major updates come out several months down the line, so just keep that in mind.
Tip #1 – You Can Change the Control Scheme
First up, Titan Quest 2 makes it very easy for you to change your control scheme, particularly when it comes to movement. By default, you have the classic ARPG control scheme of being able to move around with the left mouse button.
Luckily, if you are not a fan of this, you can simply open the settings menu and hover over to controls. There, you can change the Input Preset to WASD, allowing you to move around with the WASD keys rather than clicking all over the place.
You can also make it so that movement, interacting, and abilities are all done with the left mouse button. Using a controller should also work, since the game is also designed to be playable on the Steam Deck, though the performance in its current state is a whole different story.
Tip #2 – You Can Also Change Item Color Schemes
Are you a veteran of the first Titan Quest? If you are, then this game will probably confuse you with its item rarity colors. In the old game, yellow typically referred to magical items, blue for epics, and purple for legendaries or quest items.
Well, Titan Quest 2 flips that around to become more in line with what other ARPGs have been doing for a while now. For example, we now have blue for magical items and purple for epics.
Fortunately, you can also change this in the settings menu of the game. Before you start your first attempt at finishing the only act in the game at the moment, you can go to the gameplay tab in the settings menu. Here, you can change the Item Color Scheme setting to “Legacy”, making everything more in line with what veterans are used to.

Tip #3 – Potions Work Differently Here
If you have played something like Path of Exile recently, then you will be a little more familiar with this game’s potion system. Rather than letting you stock up on potions and allowing you to chug them all in order to survive, it works a little similar to PoE’s now.
Potions are now equipped in your inventory, and they can provide varying types of buffs on use or even while simply equipped. For example, you could have an energy potion that gave you even more max energy when used, but it can also come with other passives alongside that.
The potions work on a charge system now, and in order to regenerate your uses, you will have to engage in combat and kill enemies to fill them back up. This is the case for health potions, at least, so you are somewhat rewarded for ruthless aggression.
For energy potions, you typically have only one charge that regenerates over time. If you want to spam abilities in this game, you are better off finding ways to stack up on energy regeneration. Since your potions are going to be rather limited, get your regeneration as high as you possibly can soi that you never run out in the middle of a fight!
Tip #4 – Check Your Map Frequently
If you are trying to complete all of the quests that you run into, make sure to check your map frequently. This is because the quest log is directly tied to this menu, and there are two different types that you can do.
Fated Quests are essentially just a fancy way to refer to the main storyline, so make sure to do those quests if you want to progress through the actual narrative. World Quests, on the other hand, are the side activities that are often inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.
In this menu, you can also toggle between active and completed quests, allowing you to keep track of what you have not finished yet or check what you have done in previously completed ones, just in case you needed a refresher.
Tip #5 – Choices to Make
Early in the game, you will encounter a strange statue that you can interact with. It will give you three options, and these are related to three of the main attributes that you have. Depending on what build you are going for, make sure to take the right option to get the most out of your free weapon.
Here are the choices that you are presented with:
- Imagine wrestling a mighty lion – Might
- Imagine diving with the nimble dolphin – Agility
- Imagine observing the world with the wise owl – Knowledge
Honestly, this is pretty obvious, especially since the animals themselves are direct references to the icons used for each attribute. However, you might not have realized this if you were not paying close attention to the game’s texts.
Tip #6 – Traversal is a Thing Now Too
Although not really anything complicated, you might be a bit confused if you have not played other ARPGs released in more recent years. There are now spots where you can climb, jump, and more all around the game’s map.
Just like in Diablo 4, there are glowing spots near ledges or walls that will prompt you to click on them or press a certain button (such as left alt) in order to move forward. Just pay attention to your surroundings if you ever find yourself in a situation where you think that you are “stuck”, because the way forward can be easy to miss sometimes.
Tip #7 – Watch Out for Secrets in Every Corner
There are various secret areas that contain a bit of extra loot, and if you are the type who likes exploring every nook and cranny of the map, just know that your efforts will be rewarded in some capacity.
If you come across a suspicious looking corridor or wall, then consider looking around the area. It is very likely that this is a secret passage that you can access after activating some object nearby. Break through some obstacles if you find any, as you just might find an interactable object that acts as a switch.
These are going to be hilariously obvious in the current version of the game, as you are technically only in the introductory stages of what will be the full game around a year from now. Keep this tip on the back of your mind as new secrets may be harder to find in future updates.

Tip #8 – Died in Action? Use a Recovery Portal!
If you die in the game, your character will return to the last waypoint that you activated. If you are dreading the idea of walking all the way back to where you died, set aside all your worries and look at the waypoint again.
If you hover over the site of your death, you will find that there is an option to use a recovery portal to teleport you straight back to where you were!
Tip #9 – The Mastery System
Titan Quest 2 features a mastery system that is unlocked early on as you progress through the prologue, which should not take you long at all, especially if you are an experienced player.
To make use of this system, you will need divinity in order to unlock new mastery tiers. These are earned by leveling up, completing divine challenges, and even finishing certain quests.
Make sure to do all of the content that you run into, just so you can potentially max out your build to the extent that this limited early access version allows you.
Tip #10 – Game Too Easy? You Can Fix That
After making it to a certain point of the game, you will gain access to your first Ritual Shrine. This thing has various uses, such as reallocating your attribute points. Most notably, for this part of the guide, is the ability to change the difficulty of the game.
By selecting the Ritual of Ares, you can adjust various features directly related to the game’s overall difficulty. Here, you can spend your gold to increase the levels of enemies found in previous areas or just increase (or decrease) the levels of every enemy in general.

You can increase the enemy levels by up to +5, and each level you add will increase the gold cost of the ritual. While not directly related to difficulty, you can also pay to respawn enemies in the area if you would like to continue farming or testing out your current build without needing to reset your game.
And those are all of the tips we have for you. Again, just remember that the game is still in very early access, so do not expect anything close to a complete experience for at least several more months. Some of these may also become irrelevant later on as they adjust some of the game’s mechanics, so just keep that in mind.
