Titan Quest 2 is finally out in Early Access, and our beginner’s guide will help you get started with it. We’ll tell you all about key mechanics of the game you need to watch out for as you progress and develop your character. Hopefully, these tips will help you have an easier time diving into this ARPG! Ready to forge your legend? Read on!

Beginner’s Guide | Titan Quest 2

Customize Your Experience

One of the first things you’ll get to do in this game is select your difficulty. You’re given the option as soon as you’re done creating your character! Picking the right difficulty for you is important, so here’s a quick breakdown of all of them:

  • Neophyte – You take half the damage and also regenerate HP much faster than normal. If you wish, you can switch to Normal later on via Ritual Shrines.
  • Normal – The default difficulty. The intended experience, basically!
  • Hardcore – Mostly the same as Normal difficulty, but your character gets deleted if you die. You only get one life, make it count!

On top of these, you can also check a box for Solo Self-Found (SSF) mode. This is a modifier that makes it so that you can only use loot you find on your own. Essentially, it disables all multiplayer features and blocks the Shared Stash so that you can’t take items from your other characters.

Furthermore, you can also customize the game’s difficulty even further later when you reach a Ritual Shrine for the first time as part of the story. Ritual Shrines will allow you to switch from Neophyte to Normal, as mentioned before, for one.

Additionally, at Ritual Shrines you can also pay gold to make enemies tougher and to respawn enemies, including bosses. Higher-level enemies will drop better loot, so this allows you to farm for better equipment! Respawning bosses is also great to farm for their unique drops, or even just for the thrill of fighting them again.

Use all of these features to tailor the game to your preferences. Make the game as hard or as easy as you want.

Learn How to Build Your Character

Aside from customizing the game a bit, you can also, of course, customize your character. Titan Quest 2 wouldn’t be much of an ARPG without that, and this beginner’s guide wouldn’t be much of a guide without talking about it!

There are 4 Main Attributes you can increase as you level up your character, as follows:

  • Agility – Your overall speed and finesse. This stat is important for using Light Armor, Medium Armor, and lighter, faster weapons such as Swords and Daggers. Also affects your Cunning and Fitness.
  • Vigor – This increases your overall survivability, mainly giving you more Max Health. Affects your Cunning, Fitness, and Resolve.
  • Might – Defines your overall strength. Increase it to be more effective with Heavy Armor and heavier weapons such as Axes and Mauls. Affects your Fitness and Resolve.
  • Knowledge – The spellcaster’s favorite, defining your magical prowess. Increases the effectiveness of Robes and magical weapons such as Staves. Also increases your Resolve and Cunning.

As you might’ve noticed, all 4 of the Main Attributes also affect another stat, known as a Secondary Attribute. There are 3 of these, as follows:

  • Cunning – Increases the damage you do with Poison and Lightning.
  • Resolve – Increases the damage you do with Fire and Cold elements.
  • Fitness – Increases the damage you do with Strike and Pierce weapons.

Ultimately, which Attributes you decide to focus on will depend on your playstyle. For example, focus on Vigor and Might if you wish to be a tanky brawler! Or maybe all in on Knowledge to be a powerful spellcaster? The choice is yours!

Do note, you can respec your attributes later on if you wish to change things up, too. Just visit any Ritual Shrine and pay a gold fee to respec whenever you wish. That also means you don’t need to worry too much about “messing up” your build.

Time to Become a Master

Aside from your Main Attributes, you can also pick 2 Masteries in this game. These are build-defining, essentially working as a class system of sorts. You’ll get to pick your Masteries as you progress through the story, so they aren’t tied to leveling like in the first Titan Quest!

To help you decide, here’s a quick breakdown of all 4 Masteries you can choose currently:

  • Earth – A spellcasting Mastery that focuses on Fire and Earth spells. Fire spells can burn enemies to deal damage over time, while Earth spells can be used for crowd control by slowing and stunning enemies. Lots of area of effect spells in this mastery, so it’s great for crowds.
  • Rogue – A swift and agile Mastery centered around fighting single targets. Ideal for dealing with bosses, the Rogue Mastery allows you to deal high burst damage to single targets. You can also apply a variety of status effects and debuffs, further turning the tide of battle in your favor.
  • Storm – Spellcasting Mastery focused on Lightning and Cold elements. Lightning can shock foes to interrupt enemies and weaken their resistance to further Lightning damage. On the other hand, Cold is more for crowd control, as it can slow and freeze enemies.
  • Warfare – The ideal Mastery for straightforward offense. This Mastery focuses almost entirely on bolstering your prowess at dishing out direct damage, but it also provides buffs to your defenses. Simply put, pick this if you favor fighting head-on and living to tell the tale.

Picking 2 Masteries will define your character’s class, and there really aren’t any wrong combinations here. So, just like with Attributes, pick whichever combination of Masteries sounds most fitting for your playstyle!

However, do note that you can not change your Mastery later on. You can respec the Mastery points you’ve spent from the Mastery menu itself, but you can not change to other Masteries. This shouldn’t be a huge deal, as all combinations are viable, but keep it in mind when selecting.

Learn the Loot Basics

Titan Quest 2, like a lot of other ARPGs, features a color-coded loot system that we figured is important to break down in this beginner’s guide. Any genre veterans should already know it by heart, but it can throw newbies off!

Essentially, all of the loot you get in the game is procedurally generated. Their stats vary, and rarer items in particular can have affixes that give them special effects. Picking the right effects for your build is always important! For example, a melee-focused character would want affixes that increase Physical Damage.

With the basics down, here are the color-coded rarities in this game so that you know what to look for:

  • White (Common) – The baseline versions of items, which have no special effects or affixes. Generally, you only use these at the start of the game.
  • Blue (Magical) – Items with 1-2 affixes. They have better stats than Whites, on top of the extra effects from affixes.
  • Yellow (Rare) – Items with multiple affixes, usually 3-4. Better than Blue when it comes to stats, as well.
  • Green (Infrequent) – Unique items that can only be earned through special means, such as drops from specific enemies or quests. They’re generally a step up from Yellow items, thanks to their unique handcrafted effects.
  • Purple (Epic) – The strongest of them all, these items have the best stats and the most powerful affixes. There are even some unique Purple items with special affixes! Of course, though, these are also pretty rare finds.

As you progress through the game, your goal will be to aim for higher rarity items that complement your build. Keep your eyes peeled for good drops and become even stronger! Reviving and refighting bosses is a great way to get good loot, for example. You can also store loot in your Stash for later, or on your Shared Stash to give it to your other characters.

Explore Everywhere!

Titan Quest 2, unlike a fair share of other ARPGs, does not feature a procedurally generated world. Everything is handcrafted by the developers! This goes for all of the areas in the game, including dungeons.

As such, the developers have hidden goodies all over the world to reward exploration. Checking every nook and cranny can be very rewarding, as you can find extra loot or even extra content such as quests. So, make sure to try exploring every single square to make the most out of the game and to get loot to power yourself up!

Worry not in case you get lost, either. You always have a Personal Portal at your disposal, which you can summon by simply pressing the L key. It lets you return to a town or vendor instantly, so you always have it to fall back on when exploring.

Remember, This is Early Access

Last but not least, let’s close this beginner’s guide by simply asking you to keep in mind that Titan Quest 2 is an early access game. There are a lot of features and content that are currently missing, for one. There’s also a lack of quality-of-life features, and you can expect a lack of content as well as bugs.

That’s not to say buying into the early access is bad, but you just need to be aware of what you’re getting into. In its current state, there’s not much content, but you can get the game for cheaper and help provide feedback for its future development. If that sounds worth it for you, then it’s definitely a good one to pick up!

As for what to expect in the future, there will obviously be new content such as continued story, new areas, new quests, and new enemies. There will also be expanded features for character building, such as more Masteries and a crafting system. Minor updates will be monthly, with major content updates being every 3 months. So, again, keep that in mind if you plan to get this game.

Nonetheless, that’s the end of our Titan Quest 2 beginner’s guide! We hope this helps you dive into this sequel to Titan Quest. Hopefully, this game will fill its predecessor’s shoes as one of the best ARPGs!
