Professor Layton has stepped out of the spotlight since its heyday on Nintendo DS and 3DS, but the long wait for another puzzling adventure is finally almost over. A new trailer for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, aired during the latest Nintendo Direct, revealed a release date, December 10, 2027.
Professor Layton began in 2007, but the last new game in the series launched in 2017. Even that game was a spin-off starring his daughter, though, so New World of Steam will be the first new game starring Layton himself since 2013.
The Layton games were a perfect fit for Nintendo’s famed “blue ocean” strategy, tying together a neat Victorian story with brain-tickling puzzles, all presented in a lovely animated art style. The games are very good–and there isn’t really anything like them–but Layton fans haven’t had much to play in recent years.
That will end this December. The New World of Steam shows that time has passed, as Layton’s previous ward Luke now appears to be an adult and a detective in his own right. He’s the one who asked his mentor to come visit a thriving steam-tech city to help him with an investigation, so it will be interesting to see the characters relate to each other as adults this time. The trailer also showed glimpses of the types of puzzles we’ll be solving, which look to be right up the alley of the old brain-teaser style puzzles in the original series.
Time will tell if Level-5 can still capture the old magic of the Layton games but what we’ve seen so far looks promising. For the first time, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will be a multiplatform launch as well, so if you don’t have a Switch you can also play it on PC or PlayStation 5.
