The latest Nintendo Direct showcase ended on a new 3D platformer, but not the new Mario game that was circulating in the rumor mill. Instead it was the next game in the Kirby series, Kirby and the World Beyond, which appears to take a new open-world approach–and then break through that open world to another, bigger open world.
The trailer began unassuming enough, as Kirby explored a lush green world, discovered secrets, and floated behind a waterfall. But then he met a new companion who helped him unlock what can only be described as cosmic-powered versions of his traditional abilities. The example shown was for his classic Sword ability, which has always been modeled after Link from the Legend of Zelda. In this powered-up Sword ability, the sword gained a fiery iridescent glow, and his hat got some of that nice stitching we saw in the Ocarina of Time remake trailer.
With his more powerful sword, Kirby was able to do things like chop down trees in one powerful strike. But the bigger reveal came at the very end, when he used his newly powered cosmic sword to cut through the world itself, revealing another world hidden behind it.
The trailer didn’t go into much detail about how these superpowered abilities will manifest in gameplay. Kirby and the World Beyond launches next spring.
